One of the most common questions we get from Dublin homeowners is whether to go with a patio or decking. Both create great outdoor living space, but they suit different gardens and different priorities.

Patios are typically the better choice if you want a low-maintenance, long-lasting surface. Natural stone or porcelain paving handles Irish weather well, doesn’t need re-treating, and tends to add strong resale value. Patios also work well on flat ground and pair naturally with existing garden lines.

Decking comes into its own on sloped or uneven gardens, where levelling for a patio would mean significant groundwork and cost. It also gives a warmer, more natural look and can be built to different heights, which is useful for split-level gardens or raised seating areas. The trade-off is maintenance — timber decking needs periodic treating and cleaning to stay in good condition, and its lifespan is shorter than natural stone.

Cost is often similar for straightforward jobs, though this shifts depending on your ground conditions, chosen materials, and garden layout — a proper site visit is the only reliable way to know for sure.

Our general steer: if your garden is flat and you want something you can largely forget about once it’s in, go with a patio. If your garden is sloped, or you want a distinct, elevated seating area, decking is usually the better fit.
